Introducing..

Hello All,

My name is Bioye. After a not-so-good experience using a number of ISPs (I live in Lagos, Nigeria), I decided to start this blog so other users can share their experiences. It is hoped that this website will help other users in choosing the best Internet Service for their use and avoid the bad ones.

I used to use MTS First-Wireless internet service. I subscribed to them in September 2004. I switched to Starcomms in May 2005. Why did I switch? First-Wireless has low coverage in Lagos state. I know for sure that their coverage is bad in Magodo-Iseri and Ojodu Berger. But it appears the coverage is very strong in Ikeja especially throughout the length of Awolowo Way. Hence, not only cant you make calls effectively, you also cannot dialup easily to the internet service, and when you do, it breaks off too often. I remember spending as long as 30 minutes trying to connect atimes!! Also, even when coverage is good, the service has a habit of going to dormant mode which forces you to require to reconnect again.

The good sides to their service are:
1. they are the cheapest(N7,500 per month for 24/7 access)
2. internet service available on mobile phone

the negatives
1. between december 2004 and April 2005, they stopped accepting internet subscriptions, i cant say if they have resumed acceptance of subscriptions by now.
2. they have bad coverage in lagos
3. between december 2004 and april 2005, i did not see any apparent improvement in the company's services or any growth in the company itself.

Now, i have switched to Starcomms. Am i happy now? NO! Why?

Demerits of Starcomms
1. The internet link is very slow. I started using Starcomms internet May 18, 2005
2. Customer service is terrible. The staff at the Toyin Street branch don't know anything about courtesy. Customers are ignored and they act as if they are doing you a favour.
3. Also, the call-centers are no better. I remember a friend holding on for 15 minutes before being connected to a customer care consultant. It is common to have to hold on for more than 8 minutes before getting being attended to(on *121). Sometimes, you get the response line busy especially on *123

Merits
1. They have solid coverage all over lagos so to connect and stay connected is easy.
2. Most of the time, you stay connected. If you lose connection, it's the internet server not the coverage.
3. I think they are still better than First-Wireless

This is my little experience with nigerian internet services. Please share your own views so we customers can all make better decisions in the future and get more value for our money.

Or maybe we can start a customer-service revolution in Nigeria!! Have your say!!
